How a security service is scoped

  1. Define the people, property, premises or activity requiring protection.
  2. Review known risks, previous incidents and existing controls.
  3. Agree duties, areas, operating hours, escalation routes and reporting requirements.
  4. Match each activity to the appropriate security role and licence.
  5. Review the plan when the site, schedule or risk changes.

An SIA licence is required for many contracted security activities, but licensing depends on the work, contractual arrangement and setting rather than the job title alone. The SIA explains the current rules in its licensing guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Which security service should I choose?

Choose according to the protected subject and the actual duties. Protecting a person usually points to close protection; guarding licensed premises to door supervision; guarding property or other premises to security guarding; and a public event with several operational areas to event security. A combined requirement can use more than one role.

Does every security task require an SIA licence?

No. Licensing depends on the activity, contractual arrangement and setting. Where work is licensable, the operative must hold the correct licence.

Can security services be combined?

Yes. An event may, for example, use door supervisors, non-licensable stewards, close protection for a guest and secure transport. Each duty should remain clearly defined.

Where are services available?

The services described on this website cover London and the UK. Availability for a particular assignment is confirmed after its location, dates and operating requirements have been assessed.
